We are pleased to announce our new webinar series, “The Inside Scoop: Meet the College Admissions Reps,” which will feature concise, in-depth interviews with local college admissions officers about what makes their schools stand out, and give you clear information about what they look for and what makes for successful student applications, as well as common mistakes to avoid so your application has the best chance of being selected. Attending these webinars offers you the opportunity to gain insight into the admissions process and ask questions to the people who will be reviewing applications when you apply to college this fall.
It is our sincere hope that by attending these webinars you will gain a more comprehensive understanding of schools you are already interested in as well as learn about new schools that may be a good fit for you to consider. Students and families are encouraged to ask specific questions during the Q&A period via chat box for a truly personalized experience. Don’t miss this special opportunity!
This week’s special guest speaker is Courtney Stricklin Burgan, the Associate Dean of Admission at Occidental College, one of the oldest and finest liberal arts colleges in America and is conveniently located on top of some of Eagle Rock’s Finest hilltops just minutes drive from Downtown Los Angeles.
“Inside this urban oasis resides a thriving community of high achievers who don’t for a moment believe that the liberal arts are dead, or even wounded. Required first-year cultural studies seminars include topics in human history and culture, with an emphasis on writing skills. Each seminar has 16 students, and first-years are assigned to residence halls based on their seminar. In addition, all Oxy students must show proficiency in a foreign language and complete coursework in world cultures, fine arts, the preindustrial-era, science, and math. In their final year, all students complete a senior comprehensive, or “comp,” such as a project, paper, or exam that shows mastery in their field. Many of Occidental’s academic departments are excellent; economics, politics, diplomacy and world affairs, biology, urban and environmental policy, and art and art history are among the strongest and most popular majors. There are also 3-2 engineering programs with Caltech and Columbia University and a 4-2 biotechnology program with Keck Graduate Institute (of the Claremont Colleges).” – Fiske Guide to Colleges
Come and find out what makes Oxy Tigers tick, and if you might see yourself becoming one of them. We look forward to seeing you then, and as always feel free to share this with any friends who would be interested in learning more about Occidental College.
If you are unable to attend and would like to receive a free recording of the interview, please send us your/student’s name, grade and an email address where we can send the link to our Youtube video.
